Wouldn’t it be nice to have a driver’s manual for the brain where someone hands you the book and says, “Here, do this and everything will be great.” Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Well, there are things now available that can help. There are strategies in my two book series “Unleash Your Success”, which can absolutely make a difference in your performance, personally and professionally. I want to give you a hint right now what you can use that will make a difference.

The more senses you have engaged in any activity you do – sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell – the faster your brain connects and the deeper your focus. For instance, let’s say you wanted to improve your golf game. Imagine you can see yourself golfing from outside and inside.

You imagine out of your own eyes as if you’re really doing it, and then you imagine standing back and watching yourself play golf. You see it from both angles. You see how you would move. You feel what it’s like to hold your body in the proper form. You hear sounds around you when you’re on the golf course.

Maybe you can smell the freshly mowed grass. Imagine holding yourself the way you want, you envision yourself moving just how you need to, swinging the club perfectly. Watch the ball go the correct trajectory to where you want it to go. Envision this out of your own eyes, and then standing back watching yourself doing it, it engrains it in your brain. All the pros use this. This has been done for years.

Have you ever heard of the inner game of tennis or the inner game of
golf? That’s part of this. You get all the senses engaged. You have to
feel it, see it, hear it, touch it, taste it – as many senses as you
can get engaged – and when you do, your focus deepens, your brain
learns more quickly and you’re able to achieve more. It is the same
whether you’re building a skill at work, at home, improving your
speaking abilities, whatever it happens to be, this is how you take
your game up a level. The more senses you have engaged, the deeper the
impression it makes in your brain.

Let’s say you’re studying for a test. When you are studying turn the words into thought pictures. Picture what the concept is. You see it applied in real life and as you do this, as you envision this, it deepens in your brain. You visualize it, you talk to yourself about it in your mind so you can hear what’s going on. You feel excitement in your body, or maybe to get your senses more engaged you do something with your hands. They’ve shown that children learn best when they’re playing with things in their hands as they’re learning.

Years ago, a freshman high school student named Andrea was struggling with her history class. She was a good student yet struggled with history because she said it was boring. All we did to get her grade point to jump from a 2.2 average, to a 3.4, was energize her thinking process.

Through slowing down her steady process and in enhancing the sensory input, steady became more fun and her memory improved significantly. For example, when studying a Civil War battle she would imagine a full-color movie of the battle scene. Andrea would see brightly colored subtitles in the movie seen with historical figures names and dates written in.

For at least 50 percent of the time, I would have her her standup while she studied–because you have more neurons firing when you are standing, then when you are sitting. I had never take notes with multicolored pens. I would have her talk to herself aloud as she studied the facts and created her mental images. Through having all of her senses engaged in her guarding process, it became more fun and she remembered the details significantly better.

Take this one thing and practice it. It works very effectively. Use your senses more as you’re plugging in information. It will deepen your focus, it will grow your skills faster and your abilities to achieve go up significantly.
